How The De-Regulated Electricity Market Works
When de-regulation took place, the Connecticut electric utilities, United Illuminating (UI) and Connecticut Light & Power (CL&P), were required to sell off their electric generation facilities. They
were to focus primarily on the distribution of electricity – such as building transformers, maintaining
power lines and providing repairs. The supply of electricity was to be provided by licensed electricity
suppliers who would provide competitive pricing options to the market. The State Of Connecticut’s
Department Of Public Utility Control, UI and CL&P all encourage homeowners to choose an electric supplier.
As of today, there are quite a few alternate electric suppliers in the market. However, many of
these suppliers are unknown quantities - many are brand new, some are very small, and some
have introductory offers that are low today, but could increase dramatically later on.
